Week 16

Week 16:

Date: January 16th

Class Time: 5:30pm

Place: Hot Yoga Philadelphia

This class was extra hot once again at this studio! I really do like this one instructor though and I enjoyed her energy and cues this evening. I noticed she offered more safety cues than before. She gave me one tip that I really enjoyed in standing separate leg stretch. Since my back really is not flat when I grab my feet, even when i bend my knees, she just had me keep my hands out further until my back was flat and not move to put hands under feet until back is flat. I enjoyed this and it felt great for my hamstrings. I also really honored my body tonight and took lots of savasanas, and skipped the situps to give my neck a rest. Feels empowering to make these choices for myself and not feel bad about them!

Date: January 18th

Class Time 5:30pm

Place: Riverflow Yoga

I think this might be one of my very favorite times of the week (and very favorite places, of course!) to practice. I love ending the week with a  60 minute express. The cold weather had made me want to hide and nest more than usual but I am glad I decided to get out and make it to this class. I started paying attention to Limbs 7 and 8 tonight and specifically focused on losing myself in the poses and feeling in the flow. Although I didn’t fully get there yet I can appreciate how listening to the instructor is so important for getting in the zone. This is the backbone to finding that flow. Looking forward to exploring it more.

Week 15

Week 15:

Class #1

Date: January 7th

Class Time: 5:30pm

Place: Hot Yoga Philadelphia

This was probably the hottest class I’ve ever been too. Not totally surprised because I’ve been to this studio several times and it is definitely hot. But I think with the resolutioners and so many bodies packed in it just got too hot. Still, I was working on plurks in this particular class and was able to tune in and learn. I took a lot of savasana in the floor series to get back to neutral, and I really liked the “badass” attitude of the teacher as she made me smile and laugh several times. Inspired me to channel my inner badass more. :)

I noticed a more chaotic resting state in this class. Specifically, the instructors script didn’t encourage people to just lay in savasana when rest was needed, and people took breaks mid-poses and some were even chatting on their mats throughout class. I don’t think anyone was right/wrong, it was just a different style of facilitating a class than i am used to at riverflow.

Date: January 8th

Class Time: 5:30pm

Place: Riverflow Yoga

Always love a good tuesday night class with Tina, and she let me teach through arda chandrasana tonight. I had a bit of anxiety at first because i haven’t looked at arda chandrasana in a while. But this was a great real life teaching situation, as I won’t always be having the best day when/if I teach, I’ll need to be prepared on the fly and if I am not ready. Overall, i think i did very well, and she gave me valuable feedback. It is so great to have awesome mentors.

Week 14

Class #1

Date: January 2nd

Class Time: 6pm

Place: Riverflow Yoga

Rhonda taught this class tonight, and it was just me and one other student Lasky. This was my first class in awhile b/c i was sick, it felt SO GOOD to be back, I was in the best mood after class when I got home—which was saying a lot because it was also my first day back at work and I easily could’ve felt tired and worn out! Also, Rhonda offered me the opportunity to teach the first couple poses, which was fun. We did a music class for 90 minutes afterwards. Great start to the new year, can’t wait for more classes later in the week!

Class #2

Date: January 4th

Class Time: 5:30pm

Place: Riverflow Yoga

Tonight Tina was the teacher, and I hadn’t seen her in a long time so i was very happy to see her! I enjoyed having her as a mentor when I first started teacher training so she holds a special place in my heart. It was just me, Lasky and 1 other new student tonight—i think there is a 30 day challenge going on so there are new students and faces. I paid special attention to Tina’s instructions tonight in the spirit of this weeks 8 limbs of yoga (asana and pranayama). It is very meditative to really focus on teacher’s voice and instructions. I also found it helpful listening to Tina’s tone and voice tonight since I am scripting tomorrow and trying to work on being less robotic and more enthusiastic. She is a great example of this. Physically, I am generally a little achy tonight, but tbody just feeling tired and that is ok! just where i am right now.

Class #3

Date: January 5th

Class Time: 10am

Place: Riverflow Yoga

This was my third class of the week as I am making up for the week where I was sick and chose to miss some classes. This morning kicked off a long day of yoga for me. It was a great express class with Rhonda teaching, setting me up for a day of scripting videos with Irina, Paula, and Irene. I’ve been a little tight and achy the past few days but went to chiropractor this morning first, and felt pretty good most of class. There seem to be lots of new faces at the studio lately with the new year. I didn’t push myself too hard since I new there would be a lot of scripting the rest of the day. I enjoyed spending a couple extra minutes in final savasana today. :)

Week 12

Class #1

Date: December 18th

Class Time: 5:30pm

Place: Riverflow Yoga

Tonight I felt the power of community in class. I realized that community can be an energy and it doesn’t have to be a time consuming commitment that requires many hours. Tonight I felt community when I walked in and was warmly welcomed by our teacher Lisa. I felt it when I saw Irina just before class started and was able to give her a quick hug before we practiced. I felt it running into Janice, another student who I see from time to time, who I barely know but she is always so friendly. I felt it after class briefly chatting with new student Laskey. I felt it at the end of class when Lisa congratulated the new student on completing his first class. Bottom line is that it is wonderful to walk into a place where space is being held for you no matter what your day has been like or how much time you’re able to spend before or after class. So glad I made it tonight!

Class #2

Date: December 22nd

Class Time: 10am

Place: Riverflow Yoga

This morning’s class was super fun, I’ve been feeling excited and giddy about the holidays and going home tomorrow morning to Charlotte, and I really enjoyed incorporating my hot yoga practice into the middle of this to help ground me the day before I leave. The studio was nice and warm from the music class before, and the rugs were particularly warm. There was a lot of good energy in the room and Rhonda was able to give a lot of customized instructions to each of us. I particularly enjoyed the extra pose she gave us (a spinal twist on the ground). Paula was there too, and it is always fun running into another one of the teacher trainees. definitely feeling the holiday spirit today.
