Dropping anchor in hot yoga

Hot yoga is my port.

No matter how I may storm into hot yoga, I exit feeling like I just dropped into the calm. I feel balanced without effort. For the moment I'm floating. No longer exhausted, I feel lightly energized.  I  feel patient about letting things be, basking in anticipation of more good things coming my way. All this in 90 minutes.

The big question: how to anchor all those hot yoga-earned goodies to life outside the hot yoga studio?

"Hot Yoga Can Kill You," and Other Funny Stories

"She was the healthiest person I know.

"She did hot yoga three times every week. She meditated every day. She ate organic vegetables, gave up red meat. She wouldn't even talk to a smoker, and to her, drinking meant water...and then, she died."

Let's say this once and for all: you will die. I will die. Everyone you know will die.

Even if you do hot yoga.

A New York Times article suggested that yoga is responsible for everything from slipped disks to fatal strokes. Should you worry? Actually, that New York Times article on the "dangers of yoga" made me laugh. Here's why...

Hot Yoga is the Bees Knees - for osteoarthritis, torn meniscus and your medical bills

Your knees may be aching but why should you take a painful hit to your budget?

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, arthroscopic knee surgery for osteoarthritis, torn meniscus and more knee ailments constitutes one of costliest and most unnecessary surgeries ...because it works no better than placebo surgery.

Recent research about knee surgery might just bring you to your knees...or to hot yoga.

A double blind placebo study (Harvard’s Mass General hospital) published in one of the most well-respected medical journals, the New England Journal of Medicine - over 10 years ago!- proved that knee surgery and placebo surgery had equal results.

But don't just take the word of one study; another seven studies note that physical therapy/movement for knee problems offer the same results as that costly and slow-to-recover-from knee surgery:

Yoga in Times Square: If I can do it there, I'll do it anywhere!

June 21 is Summer Solstice, and that means a lot to us yogis.

The position of the planets, the distance from the earth to the sun, all those star alignments...it's all supposed to mean something powerful to human bodies. And what better way to use your body than yoga?

Does it really mean something? Like everything else, solstice has the meaning you give it.

I love playing along. And while I love practicing yoga, my fascination these past 40 years, and what my blog, my online yoga community, even our hot yoga classes at Riverflow Yoga are really about is: how can you apply that good feeling you get doing yoga, into a good-feeling life?

If you can feel happy/successful/relaxed/accomplished in the hot yoga, can you translate that feeling outside and into your life?

And does it work even better in the company of others?

So on June 21, I am going to join with thousands of people celebrating the Summer Solstice with yoga. I am headed to Times Square NY to do my yoga under the sun: 7:25AM yoga preceeded by a meditation - not exactly sunrise but close.

It feels cool to be part of a Happening. I'll report back here on the experience. Stay tuned!

Hot yoga and fasting?

One healthy diet? Don't make me laugh!

Everyone has an idea of which diet is best. Personally, I think eating is a personal choice; you have to feel your way to what works for you. However, one point of agreement among experts, from Dr. Joseph Mercola (whom I have followed for years) to ancient yogis:

Health begins in your gut.

There are many yoga practices, internal cleansings and asanas for cleaning up the digestive system. Dr. Mercola says diet keeps the mitochordria of your cells vibrant; so much so that it can reverse and prevent cancer. NOT another diet fad, Dr. Mercola now discusses this  new way of feeding your cells and going with your gut:
